A space designed for learning
Beginning her work almost a century ago, Dr. Maria Montessori developed this educational approach based on her understanding of children’s natural learning tendencies as they unfold in “prepared environments” for multi-age groups.
- Large open classrooms
- Low shelves containing hands-on multi-sensory materials
- Different sized tables to allow 1 to 4 student work groups
- Multi-age classes where students are encouraged to teach, collaborate, and help each other
- Self-Directed Learning – Child formulates concepts from self-teaching materials under the guidance/observation of the teacher
- Each child progresses at their own LEARNING PACE , which allows them time to achieve mastery of the curriculum elements
In this prepared environment, your child can work where s/he is comfortable, with the freedom to move and talk quietly in a respectful manner.
Given the freedom and support to question, to probe deeply, and to make connections, Montessori students become confident, enthusiastic, self-directed learners. They are able to think critically, work collaboratively, and act boldly – a skill set for the 21st century.
